Goal

Design a best-in-class EV charger experience that is:
• Tangibly human
• Accessible for all
• Adaptable to existing charger hardware

Hardware meets software

Working with Mechanical Engineers, Researchers and senior stakeholder across Europe I lead the research, design and project co-ordination for the development of a EV charger OS and Design System.
New Trustpilot categories page design
Existing EV adoption data highlighted that EV owners were still a minority across Europe. I highlighted this data to our stakeholders as an opportunity to support new drivers. Who, as our research showed, tend to be loyal to the charging brands they had the best first experience with.

Activities like team cross-country EV-safari (driving from London to Brighton with stakeholders via EV) allowed us to iterate further our 'How to support new drivers?' research. Actualising the challenges of using an EV for the first time helped us to develop our research hypothesis into the question, ‘How can we make 1st-time EV drivers experts using our charger?’

This focus on 1st-time EV drivers eventually created the best experience for everyone.

An example of this philosophy can be seen via the ‘ProTips’ advice shared with users on static 'low interaction' states across the user journey. Our research showed that EV car owners, old and new, needed support in understanding the nuances of EV charging and battery maintenance. ' ProTips allowed us to meet this need by passively educating drivers without interrupting their charging experience.

Multi-channel stakeholders

I aligned mobile, web, EV charger and signage stakeholders by showcasing design assets like a multi-channel flow diagrams. These stakeholder  sessions allowed me to depict the various synchronisations across technologies and experiences while creating an avenue for valuable stakeholder input and iteration.

Introducing best practice

To create an aligned understanding of ‘Good IA’ I asked my workshop participants to research specific websites, answering questions about their size and structure.

I have had the great pleasure to work with Derrick on a very important project where his design skills helped us frame the problem and define possible solutions.

He is a very active listener, challenges the pre-conception by default most of us have to force a clear definition of the problem and experience.

If I am in a position to look for such skills in the future, Derrick will be on my go to people.
A project learning plan

Do you have 5 minutes between your charge?

Our focus on EV drivers education lead to the development of an quiz designed to educate and entertain during 'charge dwell time' the 5-20 minutes drivers wait while charging their car.

Launched from an on screen QR code the EV quiz asks questions related to common EV maintenance and charging queries sourced from the bp customer success team.

Quiz questions are regularly updated and served randomly to add stickiness and an element of delight to a charge.
To understand the quailty of the old IA I defined  ‘success metrics’. A survey measured users abilty to find new compaines and their satisfaction with the explorative journey.

The Blue Sky design system supports a range of charger form factors (Portrait, landscape and split screen), various screen resolutions and touch and button input methods, all while being global EV legislation ready:

•  AAA WCAG compliant
•  UK PAS compliant
• California Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Regulations
